first off it helps if you use your bed generally onlye for sleeping ( not watching tv, or reading) as your body then associates it with sleeping.

Try to stay on a schedule of when you go to bed and when you get up in the morning. This may take some time getting used to.

Don't have any caffeine at least 4 hours before bedtime.
Don't exercise 3 hours before bedtime.
Don't have a heavy meal2 hours before bed ( such as meat, or potatoes. If you're hungry, have a fruit or some yogurt. Nothing in too much sugar though)

This is not for everyone, but walm milk has something in it that can make people more sleepy.

As others have suggested, you can also take a warm bath.

A lot of it has to do with lifestyle. Schedule, diet and stress in your life. A quick "fix" would be sleeping pills.

The PBS special on sleep deprivation and insomnia found that if your extremeties (hands and feet) are warm, you fall asleep within a few minutes, but if you body has to bring their temperature up first, you can't sleep till they reach a certain temperature.

So if your feet or hands are cold, warm them up first before getting into bed.

One thing that may help you is to take your tv out of your bedroom if it is in there. Also, do not go in your bedroom except to sleep. Don't read in there, don't watch tv, etc. Use your bedroom only for um, normal bedroom activities (if you catch my drift) and sleeping. Soon, you will fall asleep as soon as your head hits your pillow because you've trained yourself that your bed is for sleeping, not for anything else.
