Start the low and high speed mixture screws out about 1 1/4 turns each then adjust the high speed mixture screw first. Set it just a little on the rich side so its just holding the engine r.p.m.s down a little bit. Then adjust the low speed mixture screw for the smoothest idle. Then go back and fine tune the high speed screw again. NOTE Be sure and check, remove/clean the spark arrestor screen in the muffler. They will plug solid on a regular basis

when you say it runs a little does that meen a couple seconds, or half a minute or a minute or so? check the fuel lines for cracks or pinholes. make sure the fuel filter is clean and all the conections are tight. you could also have a leak at the cyl gasket or intake gaskets. also double check carb gaskets. it sounds like an air leak somewhere in the fuel/intake system.

Just changing the piston & rings may not have been enough.
A small engine running at such high RPM's would most likely need the cylinder bored.
The rings scraping against the cylinder, will act like a file and ware the cylinder.
