Geez, I guess I've not been paying attention for the last decade or so!

It has been in use for quite a while although it seems to be mentioned more this year for some reason. It is called that because it kicks off the Christmas shopping season and is what helps retailers get out of the red and into the black.

At least 25 -30 years anyway. As Canadians we used to watch you guys on tv getting up at ungodly hours to go shopping and say crazy Americans!

Now that the looney is good there's crazy Canadians on tv getting up at ungodly hours to cross the border to shop..... I think you Americans like us again don't you LOL.
Black friday is the term retailers use for sales that will put them in the black instead of in the red with a loss of profits.

This year is the first for me.

I was told, it was named Black Friday because the stores open for their sales at 4am and 6am in the morning while it was still dark.

Another is because they operate in the black, meaning their sales always put them in the black. BIG PROFIT DAY.

Unlike some days when they operate in the red. meaning, LOSS RATHER THAN PROFIT.

It is the biggest money maker of the year.

I have heard the Halloween comes in 2nd biggest profit day of the year.

Personally, I don't like to hear it. It sounds kinda spooky to me.

I think it was the 1970s. Actually the Macy Thanksgiving Parade was the start of Christmas season for shopping back in 1934. When we see Santa at the end of the parade it is time to CHARGE!!!!!

When I first heard this term, I thought it had something to do with the stock market or a depression . Wonder who came up with that name.

Guess I never paid much attention before. Doesn't seem like all that long, but it probably has been.
