My mom got her leg amputated about 1 1/2 months ago and last week the hospital called me and said to pick her up because she was being released (she has no home, car, or money, her husband left her few days before she got her leg amputated) So I said okay...thinking she would be able to get around because she told me she did real good with the walker.Anyway, I got her home and she is extremely immobile. She is about 270 pounds and I am a 160 pound woman with 2 kids, one 2 year old and one 4 month old.I had no idea what taking care of her would be like. She needs my FULL attention, and with 2 kids, its taking A LOT out of me.I CAN'T DO IT.She has fallen a few times and I strained my neck trying to pick her up...I have to help her go to the potty every time and she even had a bowel movement on my floor which I had to clean up.She has no medicaid and No other family.WHAT THE HELL DO I DO WITH HER.I am in tears, exhausted, drained and I don't want to break her heart but I just can't.....

The best person to give you this sort of advice in your area would be a Social Worker

Look up your phone book and see if you have
- a local Community Health centre
- Social Workers
or - a General Hospital
near by and see if you can call someone and get some help.

You are going to need to access extra funding, some form of community home helps, connections with people who can provide equipment for mobility and transfers (lifters, wheel chair) - shower chair - toilet modifications - rails - ramps

etc.

Get a social worker and see if they can help you get in touch with the appropriate people: OT, Physio, home help/home nursing

Your mom is disabled and qualifies for Social Security. In the meantime, get a bedside commode from your local medical supply place--they are not expensive. Position it right beside the bed so that she only has to stand on her good leg and pivot and sit.
Apply for medicaid. If she has no money or job she should qualify. Apply for Social Security ASAP. Most hospitals have a discharge planner who should have helped with that. Call the hospital and see what services they offer.

I am not able to help you with how to take care of her
But
You need to call a lawyer.
Her husband is legally required to take care of her.
He can not just take off.
Also call adult protective services in your state and file a complaint that he abandoned her.
She will most likely get half of all the husband is worth.
half of his wages, or retirement, property, etc.
and he may have to pay for her medical care.
Plus she can get social security disability.
And the husband may also have to pay all the legal fees for all of this.
if you had not taken her in he may have been arrested for abandoning her.( this can happen in calif.)

maybe try the Salvation Army or United Way.. If they cannot help they can refer you to someone who can. Or go on myflorida.com and search that website some under the residents section.... let us know if you find help. God Bless.

Sounds like she needs an assisted living community, and disability to pay for it.
