I think the way the last guy posted. Why give out rankings at the beginning? Reality is, anyone ranked #1 from the beginning of the season ARENT going to stay there. Besides, being number 1 is a lot of stress for your team throughout the whole season. Look at OSU, LSU, USC, all those teams crumbled to the stress of being number 1 and seeing the NC game in sight.
Anyways, GO BUCKS!

if you don't have rankings at the start of the season than you can't make any until about the 3rd or 4th week when teams finally start loosing their first game. Then you can get rid of some arguing of who is the best team. What the hell would you do the third or fourth week (or even second) week of the season and have at least ten teams that are defeated?
It's bullshit but you have to have it regardless. They won't matter and this bs can be resolved with playoffs. Hell just put the top 8 teams in it at least. Or even four but at least have the team PROVE that they can beat more than one good team in a season to win the title.

They went undefeated last year until the OSU game. Almost beat the number one Ohio State team. Played well in one half of the Rose Bowl last year. Key offensive players coming back for this year (Henne, Long, Hart). On paper, i wouldve agreed to the five ranking as well.

They go by how well a team did the previous year, include in how many offensive and defensive starters that they have returning and the number of future NFL players on their rosters. Plus, teams like Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, and Michigan are almost always just assumed to be a top team because of recruiting.

Tons of potential returning talent from last year. Of course that was on paper and they just did not seem to be ready at the start of the season.

Why do they even have rankings at the seasons start?
College Football is a joke and will stay a joke until they have a legit playoff system and decide the champs on the field.

They were ranked 5th because that's what the Associated Press poll decided they should be ranked. What other answer were you looking for?
