His term expired - that's it. The problem is that Syrian influence is still strong with the result that a new President has not been appointed by the legislature yet.

I visited the Lebanon back in the late '60s and I wish I could share with others what I found there..a beautiful, vibrant country with high levels of education, religious tolerance and growing wealth. The old city market place was a treasure trove of tiny shops and counters; butchers shops sold freshly cooked slices of lamb in Lebanese bread and the fruit was unbelievable! I had travelled a lot as a child but this was the most satisfying place I had ever been to with its mix of old and new, girls in native costumes or Muslim dress..or very fashionable European outfits; huge hotels and fantastic restaurants..trips into the mountains to cafes that used icy streams for refrigeration...churches and mosques and .....and why go on, most of it has been destroyed now and what it left is wrapped up in fear and bigotry. The government of the Lebanon is no longer allowed to represent Lebanese inters ts, it must be pro-Syrian or pro-American or pro-Israeli and different parts of government may well support different foreign interests. In the midst of all of this the President ups and leaves..granted, a lot of people have been trying to make him go but no one now knows exactly who is in charge and why or for how long or if the ones who come out on top will simply force in a puppet president next......The real tragedy here is that all of the Lebanon's troubles are in its geography..if it were anywhere else in the world it would have been left alone or become a major tourist resort ..if you don't believe me then look at an atlas and think about the position of the country and its neighbours.
