The Aztecs used two different calenders, one measured time, while the other was used to fix religious festivals. The time-measuring calender was used to fix the best time for planting crops, while the religious calender told when to consult the gods. In the time-measuring calender, one year had 365 days divided into 18 months. Each month had 20 days, and there were 5 extra days at the end of the year, which were thought to be bad-luck days when disasters were most likely to happen. The fundamental Aztec calender, the religious calender, was a 260-day cycle, called the tonalpohualli, or the "count of days."
The Mayan calendar describes nine different levels of evolution of consciousness, where each of the levels is developed by an era called an Underworld. The creation of the universe proceeds in a pyramidal fashion where the Nine Underworlds are built one upon the other. The Maya developed a sophisticated calendar. The ritual calendar that developed in Mesoamerica used a count of 260 days. This calendar gave each day a name, much like our days of the week. There were 20 day names, each represented by a unique symbol. The days were numbered from 1 to 13. Since there are 20 day names, after the count of thirteen was reached, the next day was numbered 1 again.

They both used several calendars. The Aztecs adopted theirs from the Mayans. They shared a 260 day sacred calendar and a 365 day solar calendar. The Mayans used a Long Count calendar which the Aztecs never adopted. That calendar (LC) is the one all the fuss is over...it's not really ending, just starting a new 400 year cycle on 12-21-2012.
