By "best", there are a number of considerations and aspects of washers and dryers, I'm not sure which is most important to you.

--Purchase price,
--how many years it will run without needing parts or service,
--expected life of the appliance
--gas or electric expense per month / or per use to run
--number of gallons water per load
--does the washer adequately clean in one washing?
--Can you make adjustments to suit your particular area or needs? ( Cold winter and mountain areas may need to use a warm setting to get the water temperature up to usual cold to dissolve and rinse detergent adequately with one washing)
--does it wear-out clothes unduly fast?--new ones that "bounce" the clothes have been a problem in this area Or is it easy on fabrics by swishing in a tub of water?
(rapid wear of clothing and towels is expensive to replace)
--are the settings adequate for how you choose to do your laundry? Temperatures, length of time, agitation and soak cycle, extra rinse option.......etc. One of the best water saving options - from years ago - was the "suds saver" where the soapy wash water would be pumped into the laundry tub and saved for the next load of clothes.

I go for the extra deep tub so I can choose to wash the largest loads with my water in one cycle.

My Whirlpool washer lasted 17 years. My Whirlpool dryer is now 20 and still going strong.

If you are concerned about initial cost of the washer or dryer, consider purchasing from a used appliance dealer. These are good, strong repaired machines. Usually they have a 1 year warrantee.

Plain old Kenmore by Sears.
I have had two sets. One set lasted 18 years-unheard of, and the other is already 14 years old and going strong.
