In the midst of our divorce, my wife lied and told me that she was taking our son to California for the holiday and come to find out, she sent our son with her mom and she turned around and flew to New York. Is this good ammunition?

Update...there's no reason to lie, period. No one should lie and keep their children from another parent.

Do you have proof? If so, then you are good to fight. However, if you don't have proof, you'll look like a liar and that may be held against you.

He is also her son and if he's being well taking care of by her mom then you have no ammunition whatsoever, maybe she didn't tell you because she knew what you were gonna say and she didn't want to hear it. Believe me if you want custody and you want to play dirty, you better be ready to have 'ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF," because you can be sure that every little thing you've ever done wrong will be coming up. So be careful about the kind of game you're willing to play and think about your son.
Good Luck

Talk to your attorney. In the mean time, file a police report.

Good luck.
