I know it's a very inexact question: I'd like to see a general science book that leads me in the direction of advanced material. I'm not looking for elementary level books (with generalisations), but the real explanation, made as readable as possible.

In addition, more specific topics:

Geology of rocks, history of geography
Wind directions
Physics
Botany
Natural Sciences, Classifications

Your best bet is to wander the relevant science sections at your library and just flip through some books and see which look best for matching your interests. Don't try to get it all into one book. A good text will begin each topic with a broad overview. From there, look at whatever detail you want. It will be easy to tell which are readable. It's harder to tell if it's oversimplified or inaccurate.

The most interesting general science book I have seen for a long time is 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson. It covers all the items you mention, though some only tangentially, and more besides. I found it a delight to read and a particular advantage for you is that it contains an excellent bibliography for further reading.
My copy is published by Doubleday Canada and I assume it will be the same publisher in the US and UK
