Leon Uris wrote historical fiction, which put his fictional characters in real situations with some real characters. My favorite of his is "Trinity". It is about the problems in Ireland in the late 1800's to the early 1900's.

Some others he wrote are:
Armageddon - about the Berlin Airlift
Exodus - the formation of Israel
Mila 18 - the Warsaw ghetto in WW II

There were several more. Try him, you may enjoy his work.

The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk. It was a "coming of age story" during WWII about a pampered rich kid who became a Ninety Day Wonder, that is, he got a commission as an ensign in the Navy. What follows is poignant, funny, and dramatic. Captain Queeg is a great character study. So is Lt. Keefer.
