4th degree tears are kind of scary. The repairs in the rectal area aren't able to build up as much strong scar tissue.

There is generally a lower chance of tearing with subsequent babies, but, a weak scar does have the potential to tear open, especially a 4th degree. It also makes a difference how long it's been since the last baby. The longer the healing time the better.

I'd get a second opinion. I'd also get a second opinion from a colo-rectal surgeon rather than just your OB, because they are the ones who really have the experience with the repairs and see it frequently enough to know better than your OB might.

Good luck

I dont think your doctor is trying to scare you. I personally have not experienced this but I have know of a few woman that have. It is quite common for a doc to recommend a c section after this. However I had 5 natural births and on Mothers Day just had a c section in an emergency and it was not a fun thing.
I am very athletic , small and fit even though I have had kids and I thought having a c section was very hard on your systems and very limiting the first few weeks afterwards.
I did once have a midwife deliver my child in the hospital and she did not episotomy and I healed fine. They do massages and have tricks they use for helping a woman deliver and not even have to cut her. I would recommend speaking to one for advice or perhaps a doula. The doc cannot make you have a c section and since you know both risks and benefits the decision is yours. Sometimes everything goes fine despite doc predictions but thats a tough situation. God bless .

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I tore really bad and got stitched up by a learning doctor(She stitch me wrong I found out i the end) and have very bad scaring now inside more than outside. I am 17 weeks pregnant and my doctor also suggested that I have a c-section. I'm really against having one as there's nothing wrong with the baby. He told me that I may be able to have an episiotomy but won't know till I'm closer to my due date. Have to wait and see if my scars soften up or cause me pain or problems in later pregnancy. Have you asked about episiotomy? It may be an option for you. Won't hurt to ask. I hope it works out in your favor. Good luck

I'm just like you. I had two cuts (episiotomy) with my daughter but still had 4th degree tears all the way too. My doctor said she stitched me up as far as she could reach. All the nurses said it was really bad. I had no problems when I got home and healed quickly. I'm now 19 weeks with my 2nd, and have already asked my doctor how to prevent tearing again. We've discussed inducing early so the baby isn't too big, and massaging/stretching the perineum (sp?). I'm already doing kegel exercises. I want a vaginal birth again and don't want a c-section either.

i could basically get a c-section if my baby's like became into in danger if i did no longer. Get your significant different or whoever to attempt perineal rubdown. in case you commence it now, do it approximately thrice a week and then once you get closer on your due date do it daily, then your perineal will stretch simpler on a similar time as giving delivery.

I have never torn. I'm wondering why your Dr let you tear so bad the first time and why he can't do an epsiotomy this time to keep the tear from happening.
