I do a little of both. I learned my lesson though about saying what I think someone wants to hear...not ever worth it....just be honest.

we all assess everyday conversation in our own little ways. I personally say things thinking ahead to how the person would respond to it. for example if a friend's grandfather just died then I wouldnt tell him Im having a party this weekend, Id try to console him and make him feel better....
