Technically, no. There is a synaptic gap between the optic nerve endings and the retina. Chemical messages are delivered across this gap to pass information from nerve to nerve. The optic nerve is no different.

The optical nerve is connected to the brain & the eye (along with the retina) is connected to the optical nerve so the answer is yes.
