if you live on a concrete slab, you have a huge colony of ants under it and cracked pipes from the slab settling. when it rains good and soaks the groung the ants push the wet dirt out of their area, into your pipes.buy a cheap snake and plan on running it twice a year.

The washer may not be hooked up to the drain system. Many homes may have some sort of other drainage system for washers. My house has a drain pipe that runs into the backyard, where someone dug a dry well filled with rock. This has worked for us for 30 years here, but we have great drainage, sandy soil. If someone did a similar thing by you and you have had a lot of rain and soil that has clay in it, this could be the problem.

If your drain is not plugged, then check out your soil stack. Sometimes birds build a nest in the opening or a squirrel gets stuck it it. Next option might be a broken drainpipe.

Maybe it swallowed a sock and it's stuck in the drain pipe?
