Up to 300mg a day is considered safe for during pregnancy. If you drink one or two sodas or cups of coffee then you will be fine. My doctor said that it is really only after like 6-8 cups of coffee a day that anyone has noticed any effects on a fetus. It will probably be more stressful for you to try to give up caffeine completely cold turkey, than it would be bad for the baby if you had a moderate amount.

Caffine is a stimulant and it does cross the placenta. It can make the baby jittery or unable to rest. It has been linked to birth defects, miscarriage, and preterm labor.

You are usually allowed the equivilent to one SMALL cup of coffee a day, no more. The less caffine the better.

You CAN do without, it just takes some getting used to. You're only 8 weeks, so the baby is doing a lot of growing right now and developing essential organs. Consider it the first of many sacrifices you'll be making during the child's life.

I used to drink coffee too before I was pregnant. One cup won't hurt you or the baby but it's better to go without. Try doing half regular and half decaf for a week and then eventually going to all decaf. Good luck!

Hi, I was told by my local herbalist / nutritionist that it is the coffee not the caffine in coffee that is the issue. She just said to switch to tea (regular tea also contains caffine but not "coffee" compounds). Coffee (again not so much the caffine content) is regarded as an irritant to pregnancy. Her TCM background also advised against consuming pears. Just be sensible in what you do and put in and on your body and good luck.

not sure what'll happen at 8wks... but i've heard that when the baby is born with a lot of caffeine in its system it'll have withdrawal symptoms...

Um, caffeine is a drug.
It's really no different than a could hits of CRACK in the morning.

Excessive amounts can lead to low birth weight, mental disorders, deformations.

6-13 weeks is the MOST critical time for a baby's brain development and is when you should stay away from it the most.

You can have one cup of coffee a day, but no more.

You should have thought about stopping caffeine BEFORE you got pregnant.
