I heard that they were named after the policemen by the same name in "It's a Wonderful Life"
Hey cool.....YAY for me for getting it right !
However, ya GOTTA give some "originality and style" points to "Yoda" !

Ernie and Bert were built by Don Sahlin from a simple design scribbled by Muppets creator Jim Henson. According to Frank Oz, Sahlin also defined their characters on the basis of their physical appearance: Ernie was an orange and Bert was a banana.

Characters named Bert and Ernie appear in the film It's a Wonderful Life as a policeman and a taxi driver, respectively, though the use of the names by Henson is said to be a coincidence. In the movie Elmo Saves Christmas, Sesame pokes fun at this.

Unfortunately, the official Sesame Workshop web site does not say where the names come from. We tried to contact our Muppet friends directly, but their handlers are very picky about what you can ask Bert and Ernie. Sadly, the origin of their monikers was not on the list of "approved questions." We can only conclude that the names of the pair sprung from the vivid imagination of their gifted creator, Jim Henson.

Bert was named after a homeless alcoholic who got hooked on LSD and cocaine, while fighting in Vietnam. He served two stints in the army and had been awarded the Bronze star for bravey, because he single handedly saved his unit from veneral disease by giving them bad directions to the bordello.
Ernie, was obviously a homosexual and was named for a "good" friend of Liberace's houseman. He was an interior decorator in Boulder, Co. and did a brief tour with the crew from the show, "Les Miserables". He did a lot of work on the set of Sesame Street and had a questionable relationship with Snufalufakus.
