Lamarck said traits were acquired over a lifetime, which is wrong. In a giraffe, he would have said that the giraffe stretching for leaves higher in the trees would cause it's neck to actually grow longer. Ridiculous.

Darwin's theory, of course, it natural selection. Giraffes with longer necks had access to more food, were more fit and therefore produced more offspring than short-necked giraffes, eventually making long necks the common trait.

Lamark's hypothosis does not explain how giraffes evolved longer necks. Lamark thought that traits acquired during life could be passed on to the next generation. But, they can't.

The theory of evolution would suggest that the giraffe's ancestors with the longest necks could reach food higher in the trees. Those with the longest necks could eat all of the lowest leaves as well as those higher in the trees. Thus, the longer the neck the better they were fed and the more likely they were to survive and produce offspring that inherited their long necks. During this process some would have even longer necks than others in each generation. Until the present day length.

I don't think Darwin ever wrote about giraffes. I don't know if he studied them. But, the idea would be the same as finches beaks adapting to different requirements for best survival and production of offspring.
