Yes most people realize that our military can defeat anyone, especially given time. But we are nearly broke as a country, we simply don't have the cash to patrol the world and have bases in 130 countries, we are going to have to cut back and just have a few bases and a strong Navy and Air force but they too will have to sit idle more to save money. I hear people say cut Social Security, but people have paid for that and many count on it for retirement and they did pay in, so its going to have to be the military, besides alot of these countries can pay for their own defense or pay us to defend them, maybe we could do military protection for a profit.

Israel used American forces and tax dollars to fight Iraq and will do the same against Iran. The bill for the protection of Israel must include the Iraq war. You should look into the background of this disgraceful trick by supporters of Israel against the American people.

The Iraq war alone will cost $2 TRILLION according to a Nobel prizewinning economist ( see the 1st link below) this means Israel should pay the American taxpayer $2,trillion for the Iraq attack alone. don't hold your breath.

The military we can afford. It's the way the military was used or should I say misused! Was the under deployment of our military done on purpose so the war could be dragged on for years? Why didn't bush & that mental giant, rumsfield, listen to the military generals? Everyone of them expressed the need for more soldiers. The generals wanted to win. That's what generals do. Unfortunately they were all dismissed until bush found a flunky that would go along with his agenda. This administration wanted the war to drag out, enabling corporate America to rape the taxpayer for as much as they could get. And they did. No- bid contracts, no oversite & inferior materials all added to the bottom line for Haliburton & the rest of the buddies of bush & cheney. That's what America can't afford. Now the ambassidor to Iraq, John Negroponte & his brother, Nicholous( a big propontent of laptop computers), want to supply every child in Iraq with a laptop. Nicolous says that will help them get better educated. And the American children? To hell with them, we won't even give them healthcare. Let every American fend for themselves, espically the children!

You've got a fantastic idea here: we can have other countries pay us for defense.

I think about the closest we came to that was when we kicked Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait. The Kuwaitis were very generous, and many American companies were given extremely attractive contracts for reconstruction.

Why shouldn't we get paid for our protection? It's not extortion.

In some cases, it might be politically tricky. For example, I believe we insisted after WWII that Japan could never have a standing military. Hence, it would appear that they would be forced to pay us. However, that is something our two nations can diplomatically handle.

Building a nation takes time - like on the order of 10 years minimum for us to have forces on the ground. Could be 20. You'll see a return to the draft before you see our military sitting idle.

I do agree we can move out of our European bases. Europe is essentially lost to the West. There's nothing left but the spasming.

We've got to be a little more careful with Japan. We don't want to encourage the North Koreans or the Chinese for that matter.

Good question, and I believe I have your answer.
Military spending is the ONLY thing at this point keeping our economy afloat. (And it's a sad state of affairs when building fighter jets and bombs is the chief source of one's economic survival.)
Manufacturing's in the toilet (Thanks, NAFTA). Housing is gasping for air. Military spending is all that's left; without it, Bushie's so-called "thriving economy" (in reality, what's left of our economy) would just go "phhft."
Hon, our country is way beyond "nearly broke". We're in debt to the Chinese up to our eyeballs, God help us.

Actually we can't afford not to have our Military... I know that the Left would like to use that money to buy even more votes... but if the country goes down those votes won't do any good...
Oh wait.. I forgot... that is the plan... trash this country and bring us down to 3rd world level... and live under the One World Government where everyone is equal... equally miserable...

We need a bigger military actually, that is one of the reasons why we are so overstretched. But I do agree that we can close down some of our bases worldwide and use them.

This is true, we can't afford to continue like we are now. We should just bomb anyone who messes with us and forget this nation building.
