I'd venture to say that little or no money goes to the artists. ASCAP and BMI don't even pay artists royalties due to them, most of the 'royalties' are collected by way of blanket licensing and the recordkeeping of what should be due individual artists is practically non-existant.

It goes to several groups. A % of it is actually given to various charities. A % of it goes to the artists, by their royalty agreements with various unions & agencies. A % goes to the attorneys (usually 30-40%). The rest goes to the unions & agencies. The artists themselves really don't get much of the $.
