Hey everyone, I'm a 23 year old guy and I'm interested in pursuing a post high school education and hopefully get a associate's degree or better. Problem is, I have no clue how to approach such an endeavor, I haven't been in school in 6 years. Can someone help guide me through all the confusion, help me get started maybe? Thanks.

The first thing to do is start looking around your area for community colleges. Looking at their websites online is a good way to start. You can see what each college has to offer, what programs they have, how much everything would cost, etc. Once you figure out what school you want to apply to, it's never a bad idea to go and visit the place in person. There you can talk to current students and ask them how they like the school. You can also set up a meeting with an advisor who can answer any questions you might have.

Once you figure out where you want to apply to...get an application or apply online. There might be an application fee...it depends on the college.
What is great about starting off at a community college is that if you plan on transferring to a four-year university in the future, it is a great way to get the basic prerequisite courses out of the way and you save a lot of money. Everybody (regardless of major) has to take certain core courses in english, writing, math, science, oral communications, etc.
If you think that you probably will transfer...make sure that the classes you plan to take at the community college level will transfer to the university where you would like to transfer. You can find these transfer guides online generally. You don't want to take a whole bunch of classes and not have them transfer.

You don't say anything about finanical aid. If you are interested in applying for financial aid, you have to fill out a FAFSA form. You can find it and fill it out online. Schools use the results from this to determine how much financial aid (grants or loans) to offer you. You have a better chance of getting financial aid if you apply for it well before your first semester. Apply this February/March in preparation for the Fall 2008 term. You will need your tax information when you fill out this form.

This is some basic information to help get you started. Hope this helps. Good luck in your endeavors!

Look at community colleges close to you. Get an application and the catalog. Ask a counselor there for information on testing to determine what your field might be. I would suggest you sign up for 2 classes and no more the first semester--get your feet wet first. Perhaps English and a math or something else interesting to you that you will need for any degree. You probably won't need any tests, just the application. Most CCs are automatic entry with a HS degree. Good luck and congrats on your decision!

This could help me too!

But if you want to do some research you can read up at the collegeboard.com website.

However it's mainly geared towards first year college freshman straight from HS. Something its sounds like neither of us is.
