Use a hose clamp by itself, on smaller pistons they are wide enough. I don't know how much motorcycle work you've done, but on most multi cylinder bikes you slide the cylinder block over the pistons. The bottoms of the sleeves are tapered so you don't need a ring compressor. To keep the pistons from cocking one way of the other, take a board and saw it U shaped; a slit half its length and wide enough to slide past the rod. These go underneath the piston and on top of the engine case.

If you've done much engine work I'm surprised you have been screwing around without using a compressor. There's no better way to break brand new rings than to use somethings like a screwdriver. Do you use a ring expander when putting new rings on a piston? Using your fingers is another great way to break new rings. Do you have or use a ridge reamer, cylinder hone or piston groove cleaner? If not, you need to study up on the proper way of doing such things before you get into anything bigger or more expensive than a lawnmower engine.

These are not difficult to make. Find a somewhat thin peice of metal or aluminum cut it to fit around your piston and use a hose clamp to compress it together
