Yes you have to format. You can upgrade an operating system but not downgrade without format. My opinion like other said is get used to vista ,it's the next operating system and it is here to stay.

You may not like what you do after using Vista. It's slower asks you questions all the time which most you can't shut off. You might like yourX P more. I have vista home premium and a windows xp machine and the xp works better with half the ram and a slow chip.

Yes, it will be there.
First, I'd make an image of the Vista install on an external drive -- so if you ever change your mind you can easily restore it. [Actually, what I would do is (a) Resize the Vista partition to as small as reasonable (~ 25% larger than the minimum) and THEN (b) make an image of that ... so I could restore it in a multi-boot scenario if I wanted to]
But if all you want to do is install XP, it's relatively simple. To prepare, look in Device Manager and write down all of your key devices [network adapter; video adapter; etc.] and be sure you have the XP drivers for each of these.
Then just boot from the XP CD; and when it shows the disk structure do NOT select "Install" -- instead DELETE the current partition; and then install to a new one.

I am pretty sure that when you install a new operating system you will essentially overwrite the previous instalation. As such, you will lose all of this data unless you back it up someone how. I suggest using an external hard drive or putting your infoon discs.
Didn't like Vista, huh? I didn;t think I would either... that's why I just bought a Mac.

forsure man 100% of the data from vista will be erased because if you wanna install XP its like doing a clean install. look at it another way you cant upgrade any version of xp to vista its a totally diffrent branch of operating system.
and its good you are going back to xp because vista is ahead of the hardware and dosent make your computer feel like you bought a new one hahah
hopes this helps u man...

Yes because you will probably have to format first. You can burn backups of the folders you want to keep though to reinstall later perhaps.

It shouldn't, but it never hurts to make sure you have a hard copy first.
