4x+y=11.......(1)
x+y=2...........(2)
From (2),we get y=2-x
substituting y by 2-x in eqn 1,we get
4x+2-x=11
3x=11-2=9
x=9/3=3
plugging x in eqn (2)
3+y=2
y=2-3= -1
x=3 and y= -1 ans

Multiply all the terms in the bottom equation by -1, then add the equations together.

4x + y = 11
-1(x + y) = 2

4x + y = 11
-x - y = -2

3x = 9
x = 3

Since you said you only need to solve for x, this is all you need to do. However, it is quite simple to solve for y at the same time. Simply plug your new x-value into either equation and solve for y

3 + y = 2
y = -1

subtract equations; negate the first equation so times the first equation by -1. we get
-4x -y = -11
x+y = 2
-3x = 9
x = -3 ; so
x+y = 2
-3+Y = 2
y = 5

4x + y = 11
x + y = 2

You want to get the equation so that one of the varibles cancells out so:

4x + y = 11
(-1)*(x + y = 2)

gives you:
4x + y = 11
-x - y = -2

cacelling out the y's leaving you:

4x = 11
-x = -2

this gives you the equation:

3x=9

now divide by 3 on both sides and

x=3

to solve for x, you should find the difference of 4x + y= 11 and x + y= 2

4x- x= 3x
y-y=0
11-2= 9

We 're left with 3x(+0)=9
We get rid of the + 0 so...

3x=9...

We divide both 3x and 9 by three...

x=3

4x+y=11 -- (1)
x+y=2 -- (2)
y=2-x (from (2))
plug into (1)
4x+(2-x)=11
3x+2=11
3x=9
x=3
form (2) y=-1

Use substitution

x=2-y

4(2-y)+y=11
8-4y+y=11
8-3y=11
8-3y=11
8-8-3y=11-8
-3y=3
y=-1

x-1=2
x=3
