You can use both suffixes and the Stock system for ionic compounds.

Cu2Cl2 = cuprous chloride = copper(I) chloride

It is customary to use suffixes for covalent compounds.

NO = nitric oxide N2O = nitrous oxide

One can also use prefixes.

SO2 = sulfur dioxide SO3 = sulfur trioxide
