proper naming for ionic and covalent compounds...?

is it true that you can only use suffixes for covalent compounds and can use suffixes and stock system for ionic compounds or is it only stocksystem for ionic compounds?

You can use both suffixes and the Stock system for ionic compounds.

Cu2Cl2 = cuprous chloride = copper(I) chloride

It is customary to use suffixes for covalent compounds.

NO = nitric oxide N2O = nitrous oxide

One can also use prefixes.

SO2 = sulfur dioxide SO3 = sulfur trioxide
