Helen Keller had the measles when she was 2. It left her blind and deaf. One of the most devastating effects of red measles is the disablilities which follow. That is why the measles vaccination is so important to children. By the way measles is on of the only diseases that can effect a baby BEFORE it is born. If a pregnant woman is around a person that has the measles, her unborn child can catch the disease. It can cause blindness, deafness and severe retardation.

illness described by doctors as "an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain," which could have possibly been scarlet fever or meningitis. The illness did not last for a particularly long time, but it left her deaf and blind. At that time her only communication partner was Martha Washington, the six-year-old daughter of the family cook, who was able to create a sign language with her; by age seven, she had over 60 home signs to communicate with her family.

I believe that she contracted a childhood desease when she was a baby. Most children fully recover, but it left her deaf and blind.

She was an extraordinary woman to have overcome her handicaps to the degree that she did. Although, much of the credit has to go to her teacher and her patience. She also had the advantage of once having sight and hearing, even though she was only a baby then. No one born with her disabilities has ever achieved her level of functionality ... ever. Researchers say that is because she had the memory of sight and sound.

The only FULL description I can give you is that she got a virus/infection when she was really young.

She had fever and stuff like that and it got worse.
