There's an ad in my local paper that tells me to dial a 913 number. Then I hear a long message about how easy and good a post office job is. Just send them a $38 application fee (that they guarantee to return if you're not hired after a year). I went to indeed.com and they had an 800 number that also made it seem too easy. How does it really work?

Don't pay anybody anything!

From the United States Post Office web site:

How to Apply

Applicants must apply for Exam 473 before they will be considered for employment.
Due to high call volumes, we recommend you apply on line. Applying on line will take approximately 2 minutes. Phone applications will take approximately 15 minutes.
After you have applied, you will be sent a package that includes the exam date, time and location, along with materials to help you prepare.
Take the exam. You must receive a passing score of 70 on the written examination to receive further employment consideration.
If you are determined to be qualified, you will continue the process for employment consideration.

In other words just apply to the USPS directly. You need to pass the exam before anything else happens.

70 is the minimum passing score for any USPS exam. The higher you score, the more likely you are to get hired. You need to know that disabled veterans get 5 or 10 "bonus" points added to their scores, depending on their disability. The tests that are given now are a lot different from the ones I took. I have heard there is a "personality" section on the modern test and it is the part of the test that most candidates fail. I guess that part is the one that helps to weed out those that might "go postal". Currently, the USPS is not hiring. At my facility, the last new hire was in 2006. Labor contracts are expiring at the end of the year and no one knows what to expect as far as job "security".

This company is a scam, and just wants your $38. Sure, they guarantee to return it - and how do you expect to enforce that?
