It`s quite interesting really, i did one today at an interview, after maths and literacy. It went on for ages and as i was doing it i thought what a load of cobblers this is. Afterwards i had the interview and he showed me a printout and we kind of analysed the result together. It really was an accurate description of my personality and i wouldn`t have thought they could get that from the questions asked. So i do think they are quite cleverly designed.

Yes that you can pass or fail the tests. Usually the results are entry standards an employer is looking for from candidates. They can give indications of characteristics of those being tested, depending on the design of the test. Results can be compared to other results and standards.

Not a lot but most of them have a lie scale in them to catch out people who are deliberately trying to appear good. If you score high on that you'll look like a psycho. The trick is to look for questions like "I never regret what I've done" or "I always smile at strangers" which truthfully applies to nobody but someone trying to look good will say is true and hence score high on a lie scale.

there are hundreds, if not more, such tests.

there is a reference book in college libraries which lists many such tests and tells what each has been verified to test for.
