I change my filter media about every three months. I actually take out the media and rinse the algae buildup off. It allows the flow to improve, and the media is good for a long time. Eventually the gunk builds up, though, and it ends up being about three months. That's just my personal preference though.

If the filter bag contains charcoal,it should be changed every 30 days.(After thirty days charcoal will begin leaching anything it removed back into the water). If it doesn't contain charcoal, then rinse it in a container of water from the tank it serves and use it until it plugs up. The rinsing will apply to the bag if it does contain charcoal also, but the carbon will be useless after 30 days. And while you are cleaning the filter do a small water change and vacuum the gravel. Your fish will benefit greatly.

As long as they are filter material only (no charcoal) just give em a rinse(if there are 2 do em one one week the other the next) they contain benificial bacteria and you want to just allow the water to flow through them.use tank water to rinse them because the chlorine in tap water will kill the bacteria that keep your ammonia nitrate cycle stable.

30 days. I change all mine on the 1st of the month so it's easier to keep up with the date/time. ><>:)~
