Here are some links to get you started. They explain it a lot better than I can! (And they come with pictures!)

To knot the thread: http://www.wikihow.com/Thread-a-Needle-and-Tie-a-Knot

Here are some simple stitches. You use whatever stitch is appropriate for what you are trying to do. A hem stitch for hems, a running stitch or back stitch for mending etc.: http://www.alternative-windows.com/stitches.htm

Tie the end of the stitches: http://www.moonlightquilters.org/tipquiltersknot.htm

Hope this gets you started!

If your sewing by hand pull out as much thread as you think you have to have to sew what you are working on. Tie a knot at one end {the longest }and it will keep the thread from slipping through the material and start sewing.

You want the thread tail to go under the pressure foot, and back (away from you). To avoid a thread cluster on the bottom of your project, you may want to hold the thread tail when you start sewing (just until you get going).

if you are sewing by hand...tie the ends of the thread in a knot;
by machine...let the pressure foot down, make sure the power is on and mash your pedal...
