Why is the per capita income of the Dominican Republic $10,000 and only $1,500 in Haiti?

They share an island, but there's a huge difference between the two. DR is way more developed and democratic while most of Haiti is extremely poor and very unstable. Why is this?

From what I understand of Haiti, the problem there evolves around extreme corruption of governmental officials, including the police. There is also a problem with gang lords controlling everything.... suppressing the ppl.

There is political stability in Dominican Republic resulting to a robust economy unlike in Haiti where there is chaos.
