Depends on how the divorce is going...

My current and his ex-wife agreed on everything and split the cost of one attorney they used to file everything with the court. It cost them about $150. No huge fees, no horrible fights, just nice and amicable. From what they have told me, at least one of you has to get a lawyer to file everything.

My ex-husband was doing his best to leave me penniless and homeless and he would not agree to give me anything (he STILL has some of my stuff almost 10 years later!). If this is your situation, spend whatever you need to for a great lawyer (don't scrimp!), even if you have to get 2 or 3 jobs or take out a loan. I tried to save money with a reasonably priced attorney and got taken to the cleaners. Had I spent a bit more, I would have walked away with a fair deal.

Good luck to you, and I hope you are dealing with the first kind of divorce!

It is always worth the money to get a lawyer. Be sure to ask around before you pick a lawyer. I have been divorced twice. The first time I did not get a lawyer and the second time I had a horrible lawyer. I didn’t bother to ask around the second time before choosing my lawyer and it was really a mistake. A good lawyer will save you lots of money in the end if you have children from this marriage. And you can really speed up the process by hiring a lawyer. The first time it took almost two years to finalize the divorce. The second time was a couple of months.

I divorced through a very expensive lawyer who came highly recommended by an attorney friend. I ended up spending almost $10,000 and did ok in my settlement. Not great, considering that my ex was a millionaire who hid lots of income. The "treasure hunt" is what took so much time and therefore money. If you have alot at stake, definitely get a lawyer, but shop around first. Be sure it is someone who will actually fight for you. Mine was way too passive. Good luck and remember that the main object is not the money, but the freedom from a bad marriage.

All depends- are you the husband or wife? If you are the husband, you better get the best lawyer you can afford, ask family for help, or you WILL get screwed. if you are the wife, you probably can get away without having a lawyer unless he has a top notch one himself. Women go in with a heck of an advantage especially if kids are involved.
As for me, I paid an attorney $2500 6 yrs ago even though the divorce was uncontested- I filed on a cheating wife who was just plain nasty (mean) and waking up in the middle of the night with someone standing over me with a knife got too damn scary.

It depends, if your not asking for anything and no property or children are involve it my be easier to just go to the court house and file. But if they are issues you may need to get a lawyer.

Let the other person get the lawyer and do the papers. This only works if there is no dispute over your possessions.

with or without a lawyer, it will cost about the same...and pending the lawyer you can agree on payment arrangements. I would have your soon to be ex pay for 1/2 and have that written in the decree.
