I have nearly always worked in male dominated fields so have had little interest or need for makeup and pretty clothes, I tend to buy black and practical. My man would like me to become more 'girly' in my attire but I really don't know where to start. He is happy to come shopping with me, but what sort of basics should I start with? I am in my late thirties, medium build and we go to the movies, theatre, art galleries, etc.

I will be honest, I havent' had a female friend for years because they all got caught up in being soccer mums and mortgages: I have never had children so concentrated on my career. We wear a uniform at work and I am the boss so can't really ask the other two females to help me out. I am not at all butch, just want to feel more like a woman.
My partner hasn't turned it into an issue and is not pressuring me but knows how good I felt on the couple of times I hae really dressed up and how uncomfortable I feel when we go somewhere and I am underdressed. I just think that is not as bad as being overdressed. Does anyone wear scarves anymore, I have an enormous collection of colourful silk ones that people have given me over the years.
Loving all the suggestions so far, you are giving me heaps to work with! Thank you all so much for taking the time to answer.

I saw someone suggested heels...don't think you have to buy pumps or anything. A cute kitten heel (a heel that's like an inch) is really cute paired with a dark denim.

You can start by buying some nice camis (in color) that can be paired with a dark/black lowcut shirt. You can buy a jean jacket and pair it with your camis, too. I love to have layers because that way I can really control how much skin I want to show off. Don't be afraid to try things that you think you won't like. That's how I learned how to stay away from the darker colors. If youre man is willing to go shopping with you, have him help you stay away from the darker clothes. Who knows, this might turn into a sexy date as he can help pick out some clothes that you never thought you'd pick out.

As for makeup, don't feel like you have to cake up your face. A little black mascara can go a long way. Sometimes, that's the best thing a girl can do because some women have powerful facial features that don't require heavy makeup. Once you are comfortable with your mascara you can buy some eyeliner or eyeshadow, but remember it's not necessary.

Hope you have fun with your little make over. I love reinventing myself every now and then and I always start with some new shirts. If you like practical, invest some money into some nice dark wash jeans and colorful camis.

Oh and Victoria's Secret clothes are expensive and not the best quality. If you buy anything from there, stick with bras.

Well what is making you seem not so girly? There's a lot of things, do you wear manly clothes? Do you wear your hair up? Or is it just as simple as you don't wear make up and high heels? I would start by just buying a few cute jeans, maybe bell bottoms, or boot cut pants, please DO NOT get skinny jeans, they're hidious. I would check out places like Torrid or Old Navy, possibly even Gap (I like bargains, so I would only buy stuff on the clearance rack) buy a few cute pants, and some cute girly shirts. If you don't want to get too girly, just try some t-shirt in colors like light pink, light blue, or something other then black. I wouldn't make too many changes to suddenly, start little and work your way up. Try little things like some blush and bronzer on your cheeks with a nude or clear lipgloss, and try wearing your hair a different way. Remember, more isn't always better! =)

Aww. I know how you feel. It is nice you want to be more feminine for your man, but dont change who you are. You can still wear black if that makes you comfortable. But, you can try to find a black dress that makes you comfortable. Every woman should have a sexy pair of jeans (you can pair them with high heels to make you feel more feminine), a black dress for occasions. Now, feminine stuff tends to be colors. So, try to pick some colors you feel comfortable in. Sometimes people who wear black feel comfortable in navy blue, dark green, maroon, and brown. You also need a pair of ballet flats which are not too feminine but in style. I would also suggest a purse and some dangly earrings. Start slow. You wont feel comfortable if you go all out at first. You should also try to wear some make up. That will play up your features and make you feel sexier. Oh, and if you want, you can go to a feminine salon, and change your hair. Do this if it is for you. But, dont change yourself for a man. Make sure you are doing this for you and him, not just him.

How to be more feminine... what a loaded question! =)

The things us girls have to do to look pretty! Whew!

The thing that will MOST impact your look & make you "stand out" as a woman is MAKE-UP...

There's a difference between looking like a drag queen & looking softer & more feminine. So many women don't wear make-up & they tend to just blend in. Personally, I like to stand out!

Go to Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, wherever you like to shop that sells make-up. Here are the basics for INSTANTLY improving your look...

1) Foundation... read the label & buy according to your skin type (I prefer L'Oreal & Boots)... this will even out your skin tone & make you look more polished

2) Mascara, Mascara, Mascara!! (Max Factor Volume Couture is amazing)

3) Lipstick (L'Oreal Glam Shine is wonderful... it's not too darkly pigmented & gives your lips a bit of shimmer)

Go check out the Beauty section at Barnes and Noble for expert tips on how to apply make-up correctly if you don't already. I've had years of experience, but I'm still learning new techniques, much like an artist.

CLOTHES-WISE...

You should check out Target (if you don't want to spend much on these girly clothes of yours and still look hip).

They have a great selection of simple, casual dresses that will make you look and feel completely feminine. Plus, their accessories and SHOES rock!

They always carry what's "in" so you will never be out of style.

Just stay away from baggy clothes that don't fit your frame. If you've got curves, show them off! Just don't go too tight or show too much cleavage.

I would go into much more detail, but like I said, there's so much that goes into the beautification of women. That's why there have been hundreds of books and TV shows addressing this issue.

Hope I could be of some help. Go get em girl! =)

Maybe try some bright colored v-neck shirts and pair them with a black jacket and jeans? I am really comfortable in my black blazer so I try to add color with different tops. Sweaters are also good this time if year if you live in a cooler climate - cool winter brights like hot pink, purple and turquoise are flattering on a lot of people. You can also add feminity with delicate jewelry - not too much, but a nice small set of hoop earrings, a chunky ring or a delicate bracelet would look nice.

I used to dress that way too, and slowly changed by first adding solid colors (a tee, a blouse, turtleneck sweaters, things you already use) then studied a few fashion mags looking for a makeup style that would suit me (no fuss, quick, that emphasized my features) then the hair, ask your stylist or look through the magazines again...

gradually you'll start to notice feminine jewelry too, and in no time you're buying camisoles with lace fringes and blouses with softer curves, in classy pale tones.

happy shopping!

1. put some make-up on and style your hair (ask the person who cuts your hair for a style)
2. a pair of jeans that fit right. Dark denim and bootcut is good.
3. a pair of shoes with a heel to it to wear with your jeans.

Good luck. You can always watch the show "what not to wear" on TLC and also HSN\QVC to get beauty and fashion tips.

Go shopping with one of your women friends. Go for things that flatter your figure. Things with colors that complement you. Get away from the black stuff for awhile. Get a couple of pretty dresses, blouses, skirts, and some not-too-high heels. And get some sexy lingerie too.

if your happy with your appearance don't worry too much about it... ask his opinion and a woman or gay mate when your shopping... try make it fun and explore the fashion you never thought of wearing... and don't worry about age fashion should be an expression of yourself there are no rules... but you have to feel comfortable in what you wear... you might surprise yourself with what it brings out in you; like extra confidence etc.
