DEAD! The turtles shell is attached. The spine is attached to the shell. So if you tap on the shell then you are hurting the turtle.

If a turtle doesn't have a shell, the turtle is dead. Turtles shells grow and shed scutes, they never leave their shells.

omg I always thought it would be so cute to see a turtle come out of its shell. lol. until I found out that it's kind of impossible since it's attached to their body and all.
