Hell, yes it matters and it is not abstract. Reams and reams of empirical research and thousands of volumes of anecdotal evidence and speculation show that cognitive realizations run a person's life even after they are no longer in the forefront of awareness. They are often the operating system of the mind.
Brahmanism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christian Mysticism, on and on and on, are all based on achieving cognitive realizations beyond daily life.
