I don't know if it is unlucky but I know someone called Mary. She had a Downs Syndrome child and her other daughter has an illness that is slowly paralysing her.
I'm sure there must be many Mary's who have had happy, fulfilling lives.
Maybe the reference to the name Mary being unlucky is because in the Bible Mary saw her son being crucified and dying.

Not necessarily, but some people might believe its true and only pay attention to the negative instead of the positive, so they are making their own bad luck. So the only real way this is true is if someone named Mary read it and started to think negatively, therefore making their own bad luck if that makes sense

The name Mary is ancient, It is before the Bible was written, and was the name of the mother of Christ if you are Catholic you would pray through her to god. I do not know how this would bring bad luck
