The quick and dirty answer is: "get as much as you can afford", but when you do a reality check, you should be ok getting at least 1gb of RAM/memory (They are the same thing) and a minimum of an 80gig hard drive. If you can find a bargain on a larger hard drive, go for it! Remember the larger the hard drive, the faster the access time to its data. If you look at the sale ads in the papers, you can get a good idea what new machines come with, and you should go for the same specifications. Good luck and happy computing!

Get as much as you can afford. 80Gig HDD is standard nowadays but try and get 160 or more, and couple that with 2 Gigs RAM.
