teach him how to catch a fish of course, so he can have the knowledge

Teach them how to catch it. The government gives out food stamps because the government is horrible. However, there aren't a lot of jobs availible in America and a lot of families are starving and NEED food stamps for survival. The fish phrase is a figuritive expression, and shouldn't be taken literally- especially in the 21st century America.

How can you expect God to help you unless you help yourself.
Better to teach a person to fish then to give them a fish but sometimes the need is urgent so at that time you give them the fish. Mercy first. You decide how to apply it.
Most people on food stamps are the working poor or have an urgent need because of a crisis. You are your brothers keeper!

First of all, the saying goes "God helps those who help themselves." And I would teach a man how to fish. If I simply give the man a fish, what is he going to do the next time he needs a fish? If I teach him how to fish, he has the experience and as long as there's fish he'll never be hungry. Hence why God helps those who help themselves ; )

God helps those who help themselves (and others) not only those who help themselves. Helping others would be part of giving a hungry man a fish and teaching him how to fish for himself. Food stamps are created by man. There are plenty of fish in the sea but if someone's trying to control or abuse the fishing hole why are we so quick to look for someone to blame besides ourselves? Food for thought.

Even if you teach the man how to catch the fish for himself, the day that you offer to just give him the fish he'll either forget how to catch fish or become too lazy as_ to ever fish for himself again.

I don't have much luck with fishing. My line gets caught or breaks or something always happens but I would still try to teach him how to fish.

First, let us feed him. Then, let us teach him to fish. Although a hungry man may be more desperate and desire to learn more readily than a full man, a full belly gives the man the energy to persevere.
