And when it's in a different language?

Moon,
I look it up and then try to use it in 3 different sentences - this way it becomes engrained in my mind.

If anybody knows a better way - please educate me. What I do may not be the most efficient.

I usually can figure it out from the way its used, if I get to the end of the paragraph and still don't understand I go look it up. I don't like not understanding something lol lol don't worry, I'm a dork too, I like to keep a notebook close when I'm reading so I can write it down and the definition. I usually look online since my pocket dictionary has been turned into a coloring book.

Depends on what I'm doing when I run into that word. If someone's speaking to me and uses a word that I'm not familiar with, if the context of the rest of the sentence doesn't give it away, I'll ask. Since many people misuse words, I might take a mental note of it, and see if I hear it again just to be sure. If I'm reading something, nothing beats a dictionary. In the case of some of Jack's French greetings... some of it I remember from French class waaay back in high school--or at least I remember enough that I can kinda-sorta figure out what he's saying. Other times (sorry, Jack!), I'll look up a few of the words Online to help me translate the entire comment. Not that I mind; I like little challenges like that.

I look it up in a dictionary or online. I also pay attention to the context. I like to learn a few foreign words too. I studied Russian, French and Latin in high school, Now Russian is the best. The Romance languages are the easiest to guess for me. Also, English helps because it has absorbed so many words from other languages. French has inserted most of its food words into other languages too.

There are few words I do not know, although there are some slang terms that go over my head; in such cases I do the same as 8 Track and look them up.

What I have looked up more than anything else are the various text speech shortcuts that people use. Whereas some are obvious, some have been a mystery to me, and I have had to look them up.

I check the dictionary. I don't like trying to guess the meaning from context because it's possible to be wrong and completely misinterpret what you're reading.

If the word is unimportant to understanding what I'm reading, I might skip it.

hi there,

English is not my first language so I have to be very careful and consult the dictionary all the time.

One of my favorite words in English is "contemplating"

So, if I have to place it in a sentence it will be:

"Be sure I am not contemplating matrimony soon or ever"

My Bible is on the cupboard next to my bed and the dictionary is next to it.

I go for the dictionary.- If it's a place we don't know ( or don't know for sure) we check the globe. We have a thesaurus to look for words "kind of like". It's a habit I learned from my dad who only finished the 8th grade but knew WAY more "stuff" than a lot of so-called educated people.

No,I just continue squeezing the word into various sentences until finally one day the listener does not frown and scratch his head...then I know that I've nailed it...Opening the dictionary is just too much of a hassle.

I tend to look it up, even if it's in a foriegn language(bablefish, etc). There are a lot of words that are of foreign derivation that have some very interesting origins.

When I was a kid I used to lie on the floor in the den with our gigantic dictionary in front of me and just page through it . There were words and concepts that just took me away...

Now I have the dictionary/thesaurus on bookmarks because I can't seem to pull the meaning forward of many words.

Besides, it's still fun.
