I have read online that cherry, hard maple, and plum are good woods to use for making a tobacco pipe. Around my house (In Alabama), I have various trees, some of which are definitely maple, that I have limbs from. I want to make the bowl of a pipe out of this. But, could I pretty much use any wood that I want? I'm assuming the main idea is to make sure it a hard wood, that is wells seasoned (so that it won't burn easily). Past this, what else is there to know? The pipe doesnt have to be great, it just needs to work, and not kill me (quicker than any other pipe, of course). It will be my first pipe, and I kind of want to make it myself.
Thanks.

You want a tight grained wood that is good tasting and smelling when burned which means maple and fruit woods (apple, cherry, pear, plum) are possible. You don't want woods that are soft or sappy or holey like red oak. You might be guided by the blanks sold by woodworking supply places. You might also look at the lists of woods that produce allergic reactions, most of which are not native. Woods that have latex or similiar compounds (bois d'arc?) will be really bad on several counts.

You are probably tired of looking through stacks and stacks of projects on woodworking in magazines and books of all kinds for some instructions on how to do a certain project. Here is a site which offers 16000 plans https://tr.im/WoodworkingProjects
How would you like to have woodworking plans (actually thousands of them) available to you anytime you wanted them. It would be so easy when you do not have to paw through all kinds of old magazines but have it right there at your fingertips.

A nice wooden pipe would be good. You could use a glass pipe although they are traditionally used for cannabis.
