public schools in southern california, orange county, buena park school district, don't use fables as a teaching aide any more. i'm happy to hear some schools do. they are a part of my cherished school memories.

As a kid I had found an oldbook in a wood crate at my grand parent's house. The title on the dark dusty cover was: "Langue d'eosope Jean de lafontaine" . The language it was written in ressembled french but didnt make sense. It looked like a mixture of two different languages combined with french. As I grew older I asked my dad about the book and what had happenned to it.
In a sombre tone, my dad explained to me he had sold the book to a collector for 100 dollars but he later learned this book was written in old french, that is the french spoken in the 1600's and this particular book was an original print from the first editor of which only 4 copies can be found worldwide and needless to say priceless.Lafontaine lived in the 1600's in Paris and wrote his own fables but his works were based on aesop the philosopher who he greatly admired.

I'm sorry but I beg to differ. I go to a private school so I'm not sure if it affects anything but I'm 12 and I remember back in 2nd grade they taught us about aesops fables and I remember being so interested that I got a book of them which I still own today. I like the one about the fox and the sheep.

They do teach some of them, like "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Ant and the Grasshopper" and the one with the dog who sees his reflection and tries to steal the "other dog's" bone but only succeeds in dropping his own into the water. I also vaguely remember one about a Fox, a Crow, and some Cheese... Of the stories I can remember, the Lion and the Mouse is probably my favourite.

The Crow and the Water Pitcher: ever read that one. It has a great moral about letting go of some selfish things and possibley saving your life.
Oh yeah, I got that one and the Dog and Bone mixed together.

I remember the one about the raven and the water pitcher. He was so thirsty but couldn't get into the pitcher to get any water, so he worked all day dropping pebble after pebble into the pitcher until the water level finally rose enough for him to drink.
They were really good stories, I agree.

I like most of them - why haven't they been made into an animated series...a good one someone would sit down to watch rather than something dry like they showed in school?
