Hey Shan, Yes I did the Black Friday thing this year. Both my girls needed winter jackets and boots. We got to the store(JC Penneys) at about 10 a.m., and while there were more people there than usual, there was no major crowd. Maybe only 50 or 60 folks in the store while we were there. Of course we live in a fairly rural area. There was no pushing or shoving or fighting over items (I've heard horror stories about that going on). Everyone was quite friendly and seemed to be having a good time.
The man at the check out said there were maybe a half dozen people waiting in the parking lot at 4 a.m.. We stood in the checkout line for maybe 5 minutes before it was our turn to check out.
Everthing in the store seemed to be on sale. I got both girls really nice quality jackets for 70% off. If they weren't on sale I couldn't afford to buy them. I wish I could get the girls to stop growing!
We were just watching the news and they showed what the major stores looked like in New York City. It looked like there were thousands of people waiting to get into the stores. What a circus! If I lived in a big city and had to fight the crowds I probably would stay home, you couldn't give me a big enough discount to go thru all that!
If ya get the chance to come to the states in November, you'll have to come for a visit. You could do your first Thanksgiving dinner with us, stay over and then do the shopping thing!!

I usually go with one or both of my daughters but money has been so tight this year and none of the items were "must haves" on my list so I didn't go this year. I enjoy the crowds and the hustle and bustle. I also work in retail but my store just opens at the usual time. Saturday is usually busier then Friday in my store anyway. It was cold and snowed a few inches here today. That seems to get people in the mood to shop for Christmas but I would rather stay home in front of a fire with a good book given the opportunity. :o)

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving while there are a number of sales and human beings are doing a brilliant form of paying for for Christmas. in some situations purchasers get in fights with one yet another, and so on. I even have almost laways controlled to ward off Black Friday. that's a collection of hype to get you to spend a annoying day spending all your funds. Who needs that?

Its mostly retail hype. The stores do open quite early, a few even at midnight and most have a few pricey items at VERY good prices but most things are regular price. Generally, in order to get a choice item at a great price, one must stand in lines for hours and sometimes the stores only have a very limited number of the item on the shelf (like maybe 10) so even if you stand in line there is no guarantee that you will get the item you want. Especially popular items, such as a particular toy, may be at or near regular price but many of these sell out early so that's another reason people participate.
The term 'Black Friday' comes from the premises that the sales beginning with that day will push most retailers into the black - accounting wise. In other words, they will begin to make their profit for the year on that day.

I just went to walk around the Mall but not at 4:00a.m. in the morning. I don't have much shopping to do. I left with a Hallmark ornament for myself. I am going back after everyone goes back to work next week. Too many cars and people out there today.

it is true. It's pretty much a bunch of people running to the stores to buy things on sale for Christmas. I really don't think it's a good idea so i don't do it. First off because after people spend a lot of money on all this crap, then you hear them complain about not having enough money. It's rather funny. So I would prefer to watch others trample themselves and go to stores at 4AM and then go shopping when its closer to Christmas to get the newest products.

My husband was out at 4:30 this morning! That being said, he's up at that time a day anyways, and took advantage of the fact that I'd be sleeping to Christmas shop for me. Wish I knew what he got me! I'm bad curious!!
As for me, I went later around 10, all the really good stuff was gone, the lines were terrible, and parking was a nightmare, but I got a few really good deals. Wasn't really important though, I finished my Christmas shopping weeks ago, minus a couple of items, that I didn't get today either! But I did find this great purse at like 60% off!!!

I went at 4am this morning. With 13 grandchildren this year I had to go.
I bought six of my grandchildren some real nice PJ's for $5.00 normally $12.00.
Eight pairs of sleepers for $2.00 the larger size $3.00 each normal price $6.00 to $10.00
I also got the girls dolls for $5.00 that cost about 15.00.
So, for $12.00 I have three gifts that would cost around $33.00.I will give my three grand daughters slippers, PJ's and a doll.
A laptop for $229.00 for my son that just went back to school.
Winter boots for one of my daughter-in-laws just started a new job.
I got my husand a much needed coat.
Not sure what it is called it is a phote frame you put your memory card in and your pictures play like a slide show.
I bought four of those for 45.00 0r 49.00
I gave one to my son Anthony for his birthday on sale it was $99.00 last summer. So, 40 something great deal.......
I wish you were here too we would have had fun.......

no not everything is on sale just some specific items like some electronics, and some movies (DVD) some select games for children. not everything. yeah its a mad house everywhere you go. first there is usually a long line of people waiting to get into the store, then when the doors open people rush in, and practically start running for what they want that is on sale. like there were LCD HDTV' on sale this year everywhere, that was one hot ticket item. its craziness, if you have no other need to be in the states other than to partake in black Friday don't waste your time, the sales aren't too great.

No, I am Canadian and did not make the trip. The stores up here are starting to lower their prices to more of the American price. And with the our dollar being so high, there are good deals here.
Happy Thanksgiving to all you American friends
I realize that I am a day late, but better late than never.
Shopping in Canada eh!
