This could happen for several reasons. If your hard drive is too full, Defrag may not work. If this is the case, you will need to delete some files.

it may also be bad sectors on your disk. Run a check disk. Go to My Computer, right click the drive (usually it is the C drive), select Properties, Tools tab and click on the Check Now button in the Error Checking area. Tick off the boxes and start. The Check Disk will not start until you reboot and it does take a long time to run the program (for me a couple of hours) so you should run it when you are away from the computer. Afterwards log back on and see if you can defrag.

You might need to run the disk clean up. I am not sure of the mesage you get when you try, but go ahead and try the disk clean up and see if you are able to defragment after that.

If defrag will not start, it is likely that there are errors on your hard drive and should backup and replace asap.
