Those are good stats but the team doesn't play team defense.

Team defense involves all of the players on the floor consists of defensive rotations and help defense. The Suns lack "team defense".

Because of the stats you cited it makes them an "okay" team in regards to defense. They need to be better than okay to go deep in the playoffs.

When your right your right.

Pheonix is in the top 5 or most of the defensive categories you named... They have an above average defense, easily top 10 in the league. People don't give them credit because they compare offense with defense. Suns offense is number 1 in the NBA, so a defense in the top 10 doesn't sound that impressive in comparison.

You can see how smart some people are here on Yahoo answers are lol, I see 3 questions regarding the lack of Suns defense a day. Either they like to be ignorant thinking their team has to be better then the suns in one aspect (defense) or maybe they aren't sure how to read stats and watch games very well. (<.<) (>.>)

Also how do people think the suns get on fast breaks and turn the pace up? The other team doesn't just give them the ball, they create turnovers off the block or steal. So in a way their offensive success comes from their defense, I'm still not sure how people don't understand this...

Good question Antwuan.

The Suns have never been credited for defense in the past few seasons because of their fast-paced tempo. If you're a slow team like San Antonio, the other team won't have as many possessions.

EXAMPLE:
So far this season, the Suns opponents' average 90 field goal attempts/game. The Spurs opponents' average 78.
HOWEVER, the Suns opponents' shoot a lower field goal percentage than the "champion" Spurs.

Seriously, anybody who says the Suns can't play defense has not watched the Suns actually play.

#2 in Forced TO (Denver is #1, WTH) > also tends to leave an open man for a jump shot
#5 in STL > > also tends to leave an open man for a jump shot
#4 in BLK > not surprising with amare and marion in the lineup
#2 in PPS (points per shot) > playing at a face pace leads to more shots
#15 in Opponent FG% > middle of the pack
#9 in Opponent 3PT% > just slightly better than middle of the pack
#4 in Opponent FT% > i don't think you can guard someone taking a freethrow attempt
#8 in Adjusted FG% > again, just slightly better than middle of the pack
#5 in Differential > they use to be either #1 or #2

all these numbers doesn't say anything about their team defense. it doesn't say how often they force opponents into botched plays or force a ball carrier into giving up the ball. it doesn't say anything about defensive rotations or how often they double team. no stat invented can show that. its a "bruce bowen" dilemna. everyone know how effective he is on defense but nothing he does ever show up on the stat sheet.

I agree man. I've always said that they are underrated and falsely scrutinized when it comes to defense. I think someone above nailed it when they mentioned that the cause is their uptempo style of play. People will continue to hate, that's just how it is. Maybe everyone will shut up after the Suns take the chamionship this year.

They don't have an underrated defense. They have a so-so defense and your stats show it. You're right, stats don't lie and the stats you gave show mediocrity.

What your stats don't show is that they don't have defensive schemes and do have a below-par help defense.

The things you mention get them a good/great regular season record.

The things I mention get them farther in the playoffs.

It still comes down to scoring points, which Phoenix is very good at. Hope the Suns can finally take down those San Antonio Spurs.

No they dont play D those stats might be because they play at a very fast pace which most teams dont so when a team tries to play at a fast pace their percentages go down

I think so, they don't give the credit they deserve that includes Nash, Hill and Barbosa.
