While your hemoglobin level is average for a normal woman (12.1-15.1), it is high for a pregnant woman (11-12). The reason for this thinning is of course the increased volume in the blood necessary for your placenta and womb during pregnancy.

High levels of hemoglobin is not a problem - it is a symptom. Your doctor will probably review your test results to rule out common causes of this (Heart Disease, Pulmonary Fibrosis, etc)

Or, it may just be early in your pregnancy and your blood volume has not increase enough to thin it out yet.

High hemoglobin levels are scene in a couple of situations. Hemoglobin can be elevated in smokers. It is the body's response to chronic exposure to carbon monoxide. Hemoglobin may also be elevated in a condition known as hemachromatosis.

Normal haemoglobin level is 12-16 g/l , so you are right in the middle of normal. What they probably meant was that you weren't anaemic and shouldn't worry. Its quite common for pregnant women to be anaemic in pregnancy.
