there was a wife and husband who were pretty poor. for x-mas, they wanted to give each other a great gift. the wife had beautiful, long hair, that was one thing the couple prided upon. she went to a barber, where she asked the barber to cut her hair and exchange for money. with the money, the wife then bought a long gold chain to compliment her husband's gold watch, which was the other prided item between them. she wrapped it in a box and gave it to her husband for x-mas. the husband is stunned because he had sold his gold watch to buy beautiful comb and hair pieces to compliment his wife's long hair, and they find out how much they loved eachother and the thoughts that counted.

Here's a hypertext version which has links to definitions of the difficult words. It's short even for a short story, and takes 10 or 12 minutes to read:

How can I put a guilt trip on you for not reading it yourself? It is one of the most beautiful pieces of American literature.
