I plan on getting my best friend of 4 years a really nice Christmas present (I don't know what yet). His three younger brothers, ages 7, 12 and 17 are cool. They're always fun around the house, I take them places when parents or older brother isn't around. I was thinking of getting the boys each a small Christmas present (maybe some candy & a $10 giftcard). Their parents also have been wonderful to me. So my question is: I am certainly buying my best friend something, but do I just buy presents for the brothers, for both the brothers & parents (and if so, what could I get them?) or just for the whole family?

If you can afford it, sure! Just don't spend too much or you might make them feel uncomfortable. And if you can't really afford individual gifts, bake some cookies or something and make up a nice tray and give it to the family.

Don't get them a gift ... give them an 'event' they can share together and enjoy. It can be something very inexpensive, like a picnic in winter (you provide the food, including some hot soup, and a warm drink), or something more costly like a family trip to a sporting event. You may or may not want tickets to go too ... that is up to you ... but this 'event' is not only a 'good memory' but also is 'ecologically sound' since the most you'll do is buy tickets or prepare food and package it up for them on the day ... and wish them all a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS.

You could go either way, but it will be hard to buy for the parents. The boys gifts sound good, how about a gift basket for the parents. It could be fruits, nuts, candies, and a ham or something along those lines. You shouldn't get a personal gift for the mother anyway. If you know their hobbies you could get something to match up with them. If she sews, a coffee mug with a cute sewing saying on it. Fishing, likewise. You get the idea. You keep the gifts impersonal, but friendly. You must be a very thoughtful person. I hope you enjoy the holidays.

It's nice of you to think of them. If your budget permits, get the kids something each and the parents one thing together. Unless you want to give a game that can be played by the entire family. Or movie tickets. Or give the parents a coupon which they can turn in to you for a favor later on, for example, allowing them to go out by themselves. I know the older kids don't need a sitter, but maybe the 7 year old. Just a thought. You can always think of something pertaining to them since I don't know them.

There are a lot of board games that can be played as a family. It's something my family really enjoys. If you're new to games, try Cranium. Everyone enjoys it because it includes different strengths (think Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, Charades, and word games all thrown into one, plus a little)

I would just buy for his brothers and parents. You could buy one gift that his brothers and parents all could enjoy.
