Which part of southern Virginia do you live in? It makes a difference.
For the most part, snow does not last long in Virginia. Part of the reason is that due to the southern climate, the ground retains heat longer into the fall and winter. Often, you will see a light snow come down and completely melt off all the roadways. However, this makes driving much more difficult as often the snow will melt and refreeze into ice.
In the winter, most of the days will be above freezing and the nights will be below freezing. Cold enough to freeze the water on top of the ponds into a thin ice. (It won't freeze thick enough to skate or stand on, don't try it!) The latter half of the winter will have days all below freezing. It rarely drops below the teen's, (the oughties!) but you will get a few days of it. (I'm speaking in temperature measured in fareinghight, fyi.)
Good luck!
