I just got finished paying $1300 in repairs, and owner said I need another part and labor would be $500 extra on top of this.

I called him by phone and we do alot of business (whole family of 6 goes in to get serviced by him). He asks if I have a credit card # if I could give him to buy the $300 part over the phone. He said he has no money on him and he owns the business! Then he said come over to his place, and buy the part, pay $300 cash and then to bring my car a couple days later to get fixed.

And we've paid so much in cash every time services were finshined and performed to this owner.

Is he a slither scumbag, or do you find this very suspicious?

Why would he be acting like this, demanding money up front before repairs have even started? He always insists we pay cash. He accepts no credit cards, checks or anything like that at his place of business.

not unusual at all. He wants you to buy the part! If he uses his money to buy the part, and you decide to not get the car fixed, he has a now useless part in inventory, that he paid for. HIS money is tied up in that part! If you buy the part, then decide to not let him install it, he can give you your part (he does not have anything invested) and be done with the whole mess!

Garages started doing this after they wound up with hundreds of dollars in parts in inventory, and no job to use the part on! It costs money to buy the part, and storage space is tight in most garages.

You have been advised of his policy, if you agree with it, ok! If you do not want to abide by it, go somewhere else!

In the USA, there are now some national chains(Like Aldi's) which will not even take checks, as they have found the overhead more than it is worth for the processing and sometimes loss. It must work sometimes, so your mechanic is just in the most suspicious category, but not unique.

Lots of small businesses operate as cash only. Taking credit cards is fairly expensive, and lots of checks bounce.

Of course, lots also operate cash only because they're cheating on their taxes, but who knows why it is?
