I was going to work and my back window exploded at the stop lite. Not many cars around, no rocks or whatnot. It sounded like a bomb went off in the back seat and the whole window was spiderwebbed and a few pieces broke off. I was pretty cold out, mabye defect in the defroster?

Glass is the classic brittle material with extreme sensitivity to the presence of surface flaws and catastrophic failure. Once the stress exceeds that required to activate the most severe flaw, which is not easily detectable, failure occurs instantaneously without warning. The wide flaw size distribution in glass leads to a wide fracture strength distribution. Flaws are either intrinsic to the processing of the glass or are surface damage introduced after processing. In your case it could have been a combination of several factors. The glass may have been ''fitted'' incorrectly at the factory. Perhaps a rock hit it a week ago, and although it didn't break at the time that rock caused further ''stress''. Finally you defrosted your window and the rapid temperature change was the final stress the glass could handle.

Happens more often is middle eastern countries when passing the typical suicide bomber on his way to work.

It does happen but I have never heard an explanation for this phenomenon. It might be related to the defroster but who knows since it happens so rarely.

Maybe you survived a hit and didn't even know you were on that "list". Better do a back ground check on your current list of "friends". LOL!!!

Good Luck!

I heard of this situation a long time ago. The rear window of the car just exploded with no explanation. You are not alone.

Yes. Subarus and Suzukis have both done it to me. Rear defroster both times.
